Grey’s Anatomy Drama: Katherine Heigl vs. Isaiah Washington
I honestly thought the drama was over, but it just doesn’t want to die! Katherine Heigl was interviewed at the Golden Globes and was asked about Isaiah Washington’s comment, in which he’d said:
“No, I did not call (co-star) TR (Knight) a faggot,” Washington said. “Never happened, never happened.”
Katherine looked to be seething (while, you know, trying to keep her professional demeanor):
“I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period,” Heigl told Access Hollywood at a Golden Globe after-party. “I’m sorry, that did not need to be said. I’m not OK with it.”
Since then, much drama has ensued. GLAAD is demanding an apology from Isaiah Washington for his consistently homophobic remarks.
In a statement to TMZ, GLAAD President Neil Giuliano said, “When Isaiah Washington uses this kind of anti-gay slur - whether on set or in front of the press - it does more than create a hostile environment for his castmates and the crew of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm’s way. Washington’s repeated use of it on-set and in the media is simply inexcusable.”
Already, Katherine Heigl has stated that she will not tolerate Washington’s insensitive comments, saying that T.R. is her best friend and she won’t let anyone hurt him.
I was very impressed with Katherine Heigl’s honesty during that Access Hollywood interview. It’s been clear to me over the past few months that Shonda and Co. have been trying hard to keep the drama at bay. The usual standard answers were given to the press like lines from a script, and it was such a relief to me to see Heigl speak honestly (especially at the risk of getting herself in trouble).
Washington’s comment was uncalled for. It’s almost as if he wants to keep bringing negative attention to himself. Perhaps he was missing his few days in the spotlight?
And through it all, denial shines through:
After making his comments in the press room, Washington came straight to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell to explain.
“There is no way I could do anything so vile, and so horrible, not only to a castmate, but to a fellow human being,” he insisted.
When asked what spurred his comments on the October incident Washington told Bush, “It’s the truth. It did not happen. I was going to hire some other great shiny publicist, but you know what, God laid it on my heart to say it because it was so close. The reports were all wrong. It did not happen. I’m very disappointed that the New York Post actually wrote legitimately about something that was put in a tabloid about some angry person to get some validity to this, and then it just rippled.”
… and I still don’t think he’s going to get fired. Though I can’t even begin to imagine the drama behind-the-scenes at Grey’s Anatomy. If they turned it into a reality show it might just beat out American Idol.
What do you think about all this?

[…] I think what upsets me most about this whole thing is the lying. Why lie? How do you have respect for someone who not only has complete disrespect for fellow human beings, but then goes on to lie about it publically? I’m referring, of course, to Washington’s denial that the incident ever happened in the first place. […]

Why is he lying about this? It’s shameful that he of all people would use that word, you’d think he’d be someone who understood being in a minority group. It’s a shame. Almost puts me off watching the show.
I applaud TR. Knight for standing up and not being afraid. Good on him. He gives us guys out there someone to look up to.

Both T.R. and Katherine are to be
commended for speaking up and telling
the truth. I have an uncomfortable
feeling that this may get them in hot
water with show creator/producer,
Rhimes. I suspect everyone was under
orders not to speak of it anymore
after Washington’s half-baked apology
last Oct.
Now that he has opened this can of
worms again, hopefully Rhimes will
stop protecting him and insist that
he make a SINCERE apology to the cast
and public and work to make something
good come out of all this by admitting
that indeed we are ALL prone to
predjudice and must work to overcome
our demons, as individuals AND as a
society. Obviously, he has not come to
terms with his issues and his original
apology was not sincere or he would not
be attempting to take it back now with
a lie.
I rather doubt it though… He must
have felt pretty damn confident of
his standing with Rhimes to stand there
with her and the cast and lie outright.
Could it be that privately Rhimes
agrees with his point of view? Is race
playing a part in all this? Frankly,
it doesn’t look good and I’m concerned
by Rhimes’ lack of proper public
response.
It would be a shame if one of the best
TV shows on air were to be ruined by
predjudice, favortism and bigotry.

If Washington is going to be retracting everything he said before and saying it never happened - obviously he’s lieing. And he doesn’t feel bad about it either.
He doesn’t add much to the show to begin with. His character is a good match for Yang, but does she see how he’s so conceded and completely full of himself?
I believe actors put a tiny bit of themselves in their acting - we may be seeing the true Washington.
So if anything, Rhimes should speak up about it herself to the cast and public. If she hasn’t already of course.
The fact that Knight was able to come out, and live with the things already weighing him down (simply through the public and their reactions), is beautiful. That Heigl was able to publicly come to his side, and say that what Washington said was, well, what it was is a joy to me.
It makes gay people everywhere have the courage to come out or at least stand up for themselves or even have an ounce of pride about their orientation. I know, because I’m gay and out (for the most part).

I can’t believe what a trouble maker Mr Washington is. He goes from one squabble to another with his castmates. He needs to be shown the door! No doubt they will keep him because controversy tends to be publicity, which they like, but in the long run I think he will be a liability because of the constant tensions that he causes among his castmates, a tension that can cause performances to suffer. He’s not that essential to the show and could easily be replaced by another hot bod. You know if someone had said the “n” word to him (which by the way is another disgusting, vulgar and unaceptable obsenity) he would have blown up and probably slugged them. The producers of the show and the network need to hand him his walking papers and say, don’t let the door hit ya on the way out buddy!

In a way I’m glad that this issue has been raised again. I wasn’t very impressed with the way it was handled before. All the sweeping it under the carpet like it was nothing. I can appreciate that Shonda would want to keep the drama to a minimum, but at the same time, it was not dealt with in a very convincing manner.
I’m not entirely sure that this time will be different, but at least the honesty is now seeping through. So glad T.R. spoke about it on Ellen. So glad Kate Heigl isn’t afraid to speak her mind, either.

I must confess, considering the public statements of both Katherine AND TR, I’m surprised that the man at the center of the incident, Patrick has not spoken up. It’s confusing to me that he has not spoken up to say Isaiah lied at the Globes. Just trying to keep the peace? Discouraged because he’s in the middle of publicity for Freedom Writers and it’s producers don’t want controversy? It would certainly be interesting to know.

I can’t believe AMERICA has excepted GAY PEOPLE to have their own spokesperson. Sure while the comments were wrong, why a big deal. Black people are born black and they’re made fun of, commented on and the list goes on. Gay people choose to be this way, it’s nothing else but a choice. What next, child abuse making a IWS (I want sex club) and the world just has to understand the way I am, I was born this way, I have the right to do what I want sexually to another human. If you think I’m wrong and the GLAAD people aren’t hurting anyone. I say you’re wrong. They are hurting people. People now have another thing they can give an excuse to do something sexual WRONG to another and be excepted. They don’t need rights, or even to be respected. It should be man and woman just as it has been for 1000 of years not man and man woman and woman. Although I love Ellen, Rosie and T.R. (my favorite) I think this is ridiculous and way overblown. I’m not a hater of the gay communitee I just don’t think all this is necessary. It’s kinda stupid really. GLAAD - glad about what? That people have finally excepted your way enough to make it a new religion. it’s stupid.

People just need to shut up and stay out of it. The show was going well before we knew anything about this. Even after that, the apology, everythingwas fine. But the press just had to bring it all up again. Look, Isaiah should not have said it, but he did apologize. I just think we should let Washington and Knight work this out for themselves.

What a sad commentary. I have to believe that had T.R. made the mistake of calling Isaiah the “N” word - also one of the most vile and disgusting terms -he would have shown up the next day not only with his lawyers, but the NAACP and probably even Jesse Jackson. While he is an integral part of the show - he clearly is not that important to the success of the show. A change is needed.

Why after everyone in America whining for free speech have we decided to become so politically correct? “Faggot” is a word that has been used to hurt both gay and straight men alike.
JCW
Jan 19, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Can’t say you’re not correct on that point Cynthia, but do you think that makes it right?
I wonder… If someone at your place of work were discussing you and he called you a c*nt in front of coworkers and you overheard it, are you telling me it wouldn’t be an issue because both straight women and lesbians can be called a c*nt?
If you are white, and I call you a n*gger, you’d probably just look at me like I was crazy and stupid. However, If you are black and I said the same thing, it would have an entirely different meaning.
I hope you get the point.

Washington should be fired! If I said anything like that even once I’d be gone from my job. But, twice! And lying about it when we all know the truth. He must be trying to get off the show and out of his contract. Rhimes should cut him out. Story line could be death by a crazy gay man.

I am black, but the word “nigger” does not offend me because, to me, that is just an ignorant person, which I do not consider myself to be. I would more offended by the word “bitch” because it might be true and, if it is, then it is also something that I have caused myself to be. I have not chosen to be black.
How can one offensive word be more offensive than another? I’d personally feel just as bad for being called “stupid” or “ugly.” But we don’t wonder why tv does not bleep those words out, do we? We just need to grow some balls (or breasts!) and remember that “sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never hurt [us]!” Nice rhyme. They never should.

Here’s my thing: I agree that someone is lying.
So back in Oct. it comes out that Washington calls Knight a “faggot” for being late, and Dempsey jumps in and is like “hey buddy that’s wrong.” Then Knight comes out the closet (which broke my heart cause I thought he was sooo cute).
So fast forward to the Ellen Show and Golden Globes. Washington denies he said it, Hiegel who to my knowledge hadn’t said anything about it previously tosses in her two cents, Dempsey is tight lipped.
Knight goes on Ellen and denies that he wasn’t late to the set (or that it wasn’t about him being late), that he was around the corner and he heard Washington say it.
Now reports back in Oct said that he was late, and nobody denied that. So now Knight says he wasn’t late.
My question, which nobody has addressed is why? Why would Washington after 2 years of working with the guy just up and call him a “faggot” in front of people unprovoked (if indeed lateness was not the issue).
When Mel Gibson said his junk, he was drunk and being arrested. Richards was probably intoxicated and being made fun of when he went off. Washington was…
So far all this story was he called this guy a “faggot.” I haven’t heard any background to this incident other than he said it. Because initially the late thing explained why he might have said it, but since Knight denies that, then it still leaves:
What American with 2 ounces of sense stands up unprovoked and calls somebody a known slur in front of the rest of their co-workers? I don’t believe anybody is that stupid.
And as it stands this is stupid. I want a little more information about what really happened from an unbiased source.
Cause this story isn’t adding up.
JCW
Jan 22, 2007 at 12:01 am
Michelle,
Isaiah didn’t just call T.R. a “faggot”.
The statement came during the reported heated moment (The cause of which has not been confirmed) between Isiah and Patrick and it reportedly was “I’m not your little faggot like T.R.!”
He did not “call” T.R. a faggot - he referred to him as such…in front of cast and crew members with T.R. just around the corner to hear it.
Perhaps because T.R. was around the corner he assumed he was late?
Brave attempt to stand up for Isiah, but I ask you, “What American with 2 ounces of sense” grabs the mike from his BOSS to proclaim that he didn’t call his co-worker a faggot on national television at one of the year’s biggest awards ceremonies? Particulary in light of the fact that a little over two months prior he had released a public statement condeming his own “unfortunate choice of words”?
The public will never get the entire blow-by-blow story. I m sure that after the October incident they were told not to speak, and I’m sure the same is true right now.
However, at this stage of the game, there can be no doubt in the mind of any “American with 2 ounces of sense” that the incident DID occur.

Do Not Fire Washington. I think Kathrine H. is fake. I don’t think she really cares about TR she just won’ts more camera time or a spot on a talk show or a movie. Ria, where do you get off with this sh*t?
You don’t give a rat’s ass that it has been confirmed that Isaiah called T.R. a g*ggot - you make every excuse in the book for him - and then you go making up the idea that Katherine is calling Isaiah nams?
It’s obvious you don’t care about the truth or what happened - you only want to support Isaiah.
However this all works out, there’s no excuse for trashing innocent people or putting words in their mouth that they didn’t say.

Fire Washington….Why is it that Hollywood Stars get away with such behavior? And, in the political arena what the stars say is fact. Remember these were the geeks in the Drama classes in High School. Would you have applauded that behavior back then? Katherine Heigl didn’t have anything to do with Isaiah’s failure to be a kind person. So why is the issue stated as Katherine Heigl vs. Isaiah Washington.
Because she spoke the truth and refused to let him off the hook again…. Come on! The issue is Isaiah’s mouth. Let’s not change the facts and make it a Katherine issue. I’m insulted!!!

The reason you can get away with this in Hollywood is because it is the people, the viewers, who keep their jobs afloat. As long as there are people who like them, they will get paid. There ARE people like myself who are pulling for Washington. Americans are forgiving and that’s a good quality to have.
Other jobs are different because they are more about the work that the employees do. Hollywood jobs are for the people.
Susan
Jan 24, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Cynthia, if Hollywood jobs are for the people wouldn’t you agree that it would be important to learn people pleasing skills? Or, social behaviors of the masses that are acceptable in the Hollywood work place. I don’t believe that just because your an actor you can be a social idiot. I am a forgiving person. I pity him because he obviously doesn’t know how to forgive himself and move on. I personally wouldn’t miss his character on Greys. They could get a much better actor with social skills to appease the viewers if they wanted to. Fire Washington!

i love the show, and the characters on the show are amazing. i don’t think it’s acceptable for him to completely get away with it but Isaiah is a great actor and great looking. but thats neither here nor there. the fact of the matter is he has verbal diarrhea. everyone diserves another chance and Isaiah is no exception. i think he’s on the show for a reason, and to fire him b/c of his rude remarks would be disappointing. don’t get me wrong, im not against gay people or anything to that nature, in fact i was so shocked when T.R. came out, i mean he’s just so cute!!! and i think T.R. has the right to be pissed if he is. but i honestly believe in the saying ” Love Thy Neighbor”. i think they should all have a sit down and discuss the matter with the shows producers and all.

That must be the new Hollywood fix. Gee, say stupid things and go to rehab and all’s forgiven. Well, Mr. Washington, Mr. Richards, Mr. Gibson, etc.. actions speak louded. Now do the right thing and be respectful. And, if you guys need a spiritual adviser instead of rehab, I’m available.

I think this is what is happening right now. we tend to see the mistakes of one person but the things that he do good is not given applause. i am a ga fanatic, i’m really bothered on what is happening right now. it is indeed a great show with great and talented actors. i like the chemistry of burke and george. and im thinking that it is ruined. pls give the two a chance to sort things out and settle their differences.
one more thing, the show tells about relationships. there are ups and downs there, but they still stick with each other. don’t you want to see it in real life? guys, let’s leave this to them. after all they are just HUMAN,they are like us.

Gibson and Richards both made remarks about the cultures they were talking about which shows that they might actually have some hatred towards those cultures. Do not sit on your high horses and act like you’ve never off-handedly called someone a fag or faggot. Washington was not going on and on about how they’re bad people, could be, or should be killed. So that’s what makes this situation different.
Also, Susan (especially), I am a person and I am pleased with Washington and I am sure that I am not the only one. If this is all it takes to write someone out of your book, I think you might need to learn some skills in forgiveness.
Besides, as in most cases, it’s almost always the people for the extreme solution that are the loudest about their opinions. So of course we’re getting more words and outrage about “Fire Washington, etc.” So we really do not have an accurate view about how all of the fans feel. It’s mostly the upset ones who are putting in their two cents. The only people mad at Washington are the over-emotional, overly-sensitive, and emotional immature people. Or they are gay, liberals, or democrats who just need something to complain about. Yeah, I said it!

Just for the record. I’m a married 54 year old Republican. With Straight sexual orientation. I’m also a Personnel Manager and know how many people has been fired in the work place for Mr. Washington’s behaviors. Physcial fighting is just cause enough to be fired. With the added offence of sexual harazement with 2 counts a person would also be terminated. Unfortunately it is all the Liberals who forced these laws into the work place. Business is Business and emotions and forgiveness are not part of the business world. The Industry that Mr. Washington is in is a business. I voiced my opinions as an experienced professional not a an emotional fan. People on this site are acting like Grey Anatomy is a religion instead of a show conducting business. Grow up and get the star dust out of your eyes. Washington should be fired for 1 count of physical contact with another employee and 2 counts of sexual harazement. Period, there I said it!

I only made that last comment to make a point in reponse to the comment prior.
All this standing up for Isaiah as if;
A) Someone on staff had called him a N*gger.
B) He hadn’t called a co-worker a f*ggot
(No, not to his face, but behind his back and within his hearing)
C) He hadn’t apologized for it, and then taken the apology back on National television using the exact same slur once again!
What does he have to do? Slur a black woman on television before some of you people see any wrong in his actions?
Isaiah “referred” to a cast member as a faggot in front of cast, crew and within hearing of said cast member.
Anyone who’s going to stand up for such behaviour and not condemn it has a problem.
This issue has nothing to do with the race of the individuals involved. However, the reaction of some people commenting DOES shed light on the attitude of a portion of the African American community towards gays, and my just explain where Isaiah gets his prejudice from.

Uh…Cynthia - you didn’t have to “realize” you were straight because apparently you were or are and you were raised in a society where if you are straight, it is not a big issue.
No doubt there was an age when you became aware of having sexual feelings.
For gay people, they usually don’t “realize” they are gay until they come to that same age, even if perhaps they sensed something “different” about themselves before that point.
I think most people are not aware of having sexual feelings or inclinations until they’re about 11 or 12…
I hope that helps to explain it for you.
